Wood therapy vs pressotherapy: which is better for legs and cellulite?

Wood-tool massage and pneumatic compression offer different experiences. Compare them in terms of what you want to feel, skin sensitivity and everyday practicality, without confusing comfort with changes in body shape.

Wood therapy vs pressotherapy: which is better for legs and cellulite?

Wood therapy (maderotherapy) uses wooden tools to massage specific areas, whereas pressotherapy applies compression through inflatable air chambers. Your choice depends on what you are looking for: a targeted massage, more comfortable legs or a self-guided home routine. The available references do not establish that either technique is universally superior for cellulite. [1] [2] [3]

A wooden roller moving over the thighs; compression boots inflating around the legs. The marketing promises may sound alike, but the techniques are different. When choosing, look at what actually happens during a session rather than which treatment claims the greatest reduction in centimetres.

What is the difference between wood therapy and pressotherapy?

Wood therapy involves moving massage tools over the body; pressotherapy relies on repeated inflation and deflation. In a wood massage, the practitioner chooses the movements and adjusts the technique. With pneumatic compression, a programmed sequence controls the air flowing into the garment. [1] [2]

Wood massage is about more than the material of the tools: ask how the practitioner adapts the treatment. Our comparison of pressotherapy and rolling massagelooks instead at techniques that manipulate a fold of skin.

Compare the experience, not promises about your figure
Criterion Wood therapy Pressotherapy
Equipment Wooden tools moved across the area. A garment containing inflatable air chambers.
How it works The practitioner selects each movement. The device inflates and releases according to a programme.
Personalisation Hand pressure, technique and areas treated. Fit, coverage and available settings.
At home You need to learn and perform the movements. The device controls the cycles once fitted.
Costs to compare Price of sessions or tools, including any guidance. Cost of the complete device and what comes in the kit.
Key question How is the massage adjusted to my sensitivity? Will the garment fit me and can I use its settings comfortably?

Can wood therapy really get rid of cellulite?

The available evidence does not support a promise of lasting cellulite removal. A 2025 conference abstract reports cosmetic benefits but gives no sample size, comparison group or numerical findings. That summary cannot establish lasting effectiveness or superiority over compression boots. [1]

The American Academy of Dermatology describes mixed and often temporary results for endermologie. This is a form of mechanical massage using suction, not wood therapy, so it cannot automatically validate the latter. [3]

The same standard applies to Eclipse. Legs that feel lighter are not proof that cellulite dimples have diminished. Comparing massage techniques cannot, on its own, justify claims of fat loss.

Focus — Choose how you want to feel, not a body you feel obliged to change. You can enjoy a massage without pursuing weight loss. Before comparing before-and-after photographs, decide what matters most to you: comfortable legs, the pleasure of massage or a particular cosmetic concern.

What if your legs are sensitive or bruise easily?

Unusual tenderness deserves attention before you intensify a massage. Lipoedema can involve pain and easy bruising. These signs are not enough to diagnose yourself, but they are worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Our guide to lipoedema versus cellulite explains the differences. [5]

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that some reported adverse events from massage involve forceful techniques or vulnerable individuals. Wooden tools being described as “natural” is no reason to ignore appropriate adjustments. [4]

  • Tell the practitioner about pain, unusual bruising and any medication you take.
  • Ask what will change if the treatment becomes uncomfortable.
  • Do not continue a painful session in the hope of a better result.

Before using compression, also read the pressotherapy safety precautions. Lowering the intensity does not replace an assessment if a medical problem is suspected.

Which option suits an independent home routine?

Pressotherapy may appeal to you if you want programmed compression cycles rather than performing a hands-on massage yourself. First check the garment measurements, which areas it covers and whether the control unit is included.

The complete Eclipse Wave Compression™ 8C trouser kit covers the legs and extends towards the hips and buttocks. If your priority is the legs, explore the complete Eclipse 8C compression-boots kit. These are two forms of pneumatic compression, not substitutes that reproduce a wood massage.

Frequently asked questions

Can wood therapy and pressotherapy be combined?

The available references do not define a universal order or frequency. Avoid stacking treatments on a painful or bruised area; seek the practitioner's advice and follow the device instructions.

Does bruising mean wood therapy is working?

No. A bruise is not a measure of cellulite improvement. Report it and reassess the technique instead of treating it as a necessary stage of the process.

Can a home wood-therapy kit replace a practitioner?

Owning the tools does not reproduce the practitioner's assessment or ability to adapt the technique. Before buying, check what guidance is offered, how the tools should be used and what results you can reasonably expect. [4]
